Review of Punch-Drunk Love (2002) by Brett B — 06 Jul 2012
Impeccable cinematic craft and very strong acting are (almost) torpedoed by excessive quirkiness. The film starts off weird, then gets weirder, and the offbeat tone kept me at arm's length, making it difficult to connect with the more human, emotional nature of the romantic elements.
That aside, I do think this is - by any objective measure - Adam Sandler's best performance. That might be damning with faint praise, but I bought him as this story's leading man, and he more than acquits himself.
As a whole piece, though, the movie didn't (and still doesn't) sit right with me; it's just needlessly strange, and the initial impression was that this is no THERE WILL BE BLOOD or BOOGIE NIGHTS.
