Review of Psycho (2007) by Bill M — 10 Sep 2013
A masterpiece of the macabre, this landmark horror film gave birth single handedly to not just the the whole slasher movie sub genre but the whole of modern horror, what had up till then been wolfmen, creatures from other planets and Dracula took a remarkable turn into some unheralded in it's subversive darkness, it's visceral, relatively graphic violence and shocking content, it gave us the modern horror genre, and that is a pretty massive deal, Psycho is a tide changing movie.
It's also still just absolutely gripping and scary. Brilliantly mixing dark, subversive humor with grim horror and taking some (still) shocking, bold narrative turns that most modern films wouldn't dare try (can you see them killing Sandra Bullock after the first hour of a film now?) the gleefully rule breaking and perversely unpredictable "psycho" is master Alfred hitchcock's finest hour.
