Review of Prince of Darkness (1987) by Daniel S — 13 Sep 2016
Jesus Christ and Satan were aliens who ended up at odds with each other on Earth.....hmmmmm. As long as you're willing to buy into that you'll be pleasantly surprised by this forgotten 1980's horror gem.
Part of the so-called "John Carpenter Apocalypse Trilogy" the director scores again with this moody dark piece. Donald Pleasence and Jameson Parker (yes the guy from Simon & Simon) do a magnificent job of carrying a script that heavily blends together science and religion that is at times confusing.
Despite the fact it may take multiple viewings to fully grasp what Carpenter is trying to say, he ultimately succeeds demonstrating that science and religion are not mutually exclusive. Beyond that this movie is just scary as hell.
I can't think of more than five movies that legitimately scare me but this is one of them. Carpenter also succeeds with a great supporting cast by using under rated Dennis Dun and Victor Wong from "Big Trouble in Little China".
Look for a small role by rock legend Alice Cooper as well. Be forewarned, after viewing you may not look at mirrors the same way again!
