Review of Poltergeist (2015) by Easythere P — 06 Jul 2015
No character development + no humour = no scares.
I knew this wasn't going to be much compared to the original, but I didn't expect it to be a lame horror movie full stop.
The original developed the characters. It had humour and warmth. Some of the scenes made you laugh out loud. You liked the family. You identified with them.
And that liking and identification is what made the original scary.
The characters in the remake are cardboard cutouts. I couldn't care less about them.
It's not the fault of the actors - they just had bugger all to work with. We all got a little bit of back story instead of character development.
I especially disliked the character of the nervous, fearful son who turns hero. It seemed a lazy way of neatly tying the plot together without expending much thought or energy.
If you've never seen Poltergeist, skip this and watch the original instead.
