Review of Pixels (2010) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
Game Over.
A person cannot really call Pixels disappointing when their expectations were set so low, but it still ended up that way. This is a film that really had potential, with a very capable director at the helm, yet it is the stupid, new happy Madison humor that really bring the film down.
On the bright side the film does have a solid first act but sadly it goes down from there, the story becomes ridiculous, but is self aware of that. It could've been handled better of it would have been for better writing and less ridiculous plot points. The film itself did have a few funny moments though and Columbus is solid in his direction even though it falters when it feels like sandler takes over. The film did have potential but it sadly didn't live up to what it promised in the first act.
On the negative side Josh Gad was very very annoying so was Dinkledge. I couldn't stand some of the ridiculous plot points that were used. The villain was laughably stupid and was very kind for a race that wanted to destroy humanity. Some jokes really fell flat also, but the visuals were still cool with serviceable action sequences.
Overall Pixels is Definitly aimed at a younger audience with the nostalgia element not very effective for those older members of the audience. Madison should've let Chris Columbus take over more because it was him who was the bright spot in a big mess.
Rating: C (6.4).
