Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Dragonsfoe . — 17 Aug 2016
Certainly Special.
Midnight Special is a intriguing and unique installment in Jeff Nichols filmography. It is suspenseful and tension filled, with many different types of grounded sci-if elements compiled throughout.
It is filled with terrific performances. Edgerton and Shannon make sure the world is believable and grounded and are crucial to what makes the film work so well. The journey and mythology around the protagonist is very interesting and mysterious, making a very entertaining case that is very original in the modern blockbuster landscape.
Jeff Nichols trusts his audience, but some may not trust them enough. There is a lot of mythology that takes place before the film, but it is never exploded on screen. It takes the viewers imagination to put the puzzle pieces together to complete the story.
Overall Midnight Special is an unique and awe inspiring film that is refreshing in a movie landscape which lacks originality. That alone is worth the full ticket price.
Rating: 7.6 (B).
