Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Dragonsfoe . — 02 May 2016
True Artificial Intelligence.
Ex Machina follows Domnhall Gleeson who portrays one of the top coders in Oscar Isaac's company. He is chosen to visit him and test Ava, a robot who is played by a remarkable newcomer.
First of all the acting is superb, Isaac and Gleeson have great chemistry. The relationship they have is odd but very entertaining. In this 3 person show the person who really shines is the newcomer playing Ava. She feels, sounds, and acts like a robot, both terrifying and intriguing when needed. This and the fantastic visual effects which makes the performance more and more fascinating. The cinematography was beautiful as well as the fantastic dialogue, both are definite highlights in the film. Another great player in the story is the score, which is electric and captivating.
There is one big problem I have with Ex Machina. Once it's ending comes, it is very cliche, it's something that we all saw coming. It would help if the ending was less predictable, if it was more surprising we would've had a instant classic on our hands. But the ending was unsettling, and pretty scary. I thought the ending was decent, but it left me wanting more.
Overall, Ex Machina is a fantastic character study (literally) that focuses on its 3 main characters. Filled with fantastic cinematography that never fails to show two sides of the same coin. With great buildup but a letdown of a ending, Ex Machina remains to be a great film, of life and of artificial intelligence.
Rating: 7.9 (B+).
