Review of Pickpocket (1959) by Steven R — 19 Sep 2008
I remember absolutely loving the movie the first time I saw it. I recently rewatched it, but didn't enjoy it as much but I believe that's because I kept on being interrupted. The movie is Bresson's masterpiece including all of his wonderful stylistic choices.
Like in every Bresson movie, the protaganist was told not to act, and because of Bresson's style the protaganist ends up being so multi-layered in his thought and personality. True art is here. As a lover of illiusions, the pickpocketing scenes were incredible.
The train scene is highly memorable and the watch stealing is always a thrill. In the end, one of my favorite movies and probably my favorite Bresson film. He truly creates a film about man and false destiny here.
