Review of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) by Chris C — 20 Dec 2010
Pretty sick concept which makes it nearly impossible to sympathise with the lead character Grenouille. I spent most of the film waiting for his horrible comeuppance for being a sick little puppy. Despite this, the film is beautifully made capturing the sights and smells (good or otherwise) of 18th century France.
Dustin Hoffman steals the show as the parfumier Baldini who teaches Grenouille his terrible trade and the performances generally excel and are believable. Coupled with a stunning ending, it's a strong film albeit more disturbing than the worst slasher film.
