Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Karl L — 08 Aug 2010
The hopeful but uncertain ending moves into timeless territory. Already a great court room drama and satire before then, gloriously well made, investigating corruption and what constitutes cowardice within the military during wartime.
Needless to say it's Kubrick and the tracking shots and cinematography are powerful, as is the casting. The ending shots of men being moved by a young woman (Kubrick's wife), put on stage to dance but instead singing are more powerful, Kubrick showing his heart.
This is the movie Steven Spielberg played for his friends the day Kubrick died, to show he was more human than remembered.
