Review of Pather Panchali (1955) by Aritra S — 05 Dec 2015
This Masterpiece from Satyajit Ray was my most anticipated film overall to watch, I've been waiting over a decade to see it and I am glad I waited. This is the 1st film in "The Apu Trilogy" and is widely considered one of India's greatest films.
It has much more in common with Italian Neo-realism than the typical Bollywood Musicals that are more commonplace in India. It's the first film from master director Satyajit Ray, and it exudes a lot of confidence and beauty.
It essentially follows a family living in very poor conditions and shows it to us through the eyes of 2 children, the younger of whom is Apu. It is is well written, acted, and shot. It's a very compelling film and highly rewarding.
It just went through a 4k restoration from Criterion Collection and looks more beautiful on Blu-ray than it ever has which is why I am glad I waited. This is a MUST for all cinema lovers!
