Review of Passengers (2016) by Healingtoolbox — 29 Jan 2017
If you liked Gravity you'll like this. Gravity is the closest comparison: great acting, great effects, weak, seviceable plot. Again, as with many imaginative movies, I liked it more than the reviews.
I liked it more than I thought I would. The plot did not remind me of Titanic; and, I do see the comparison. What it does well and better than many space movies, is capture the awe, majesty and wonder of space life and its dangers--as Gravity did so well.
Same effects house MPC for both, I believe. I liked both leads. They are acting at the top of their forms. I liked how the woman's role is written. You don't see that much range in a female character in this type of story usually.
Aurora has more range as a character than the female lead in Titantic. From reading the reviews first, I was afraid it was going to be another "studio suits" driven disaster like 2015's Peter Pan.
In this case I could "hear" the suits tamping down the extremes of the movie' and yet, I found the "romance" and its resolution rather satisfying. In terms of the poor reception, I think we have another BFG and Kubo situaiton; where, audiences cannot absorb, appreciate, receive a work of art with many very high frequency aspects and high intelligence and coherence.
