Review of Passengers (2016) by Sean A — 13 Mar 2017
I'm almost amazed at the low ratings. Reading the critiques I see that most of the reviewers lack subtlety. They want everything spelled out in big block letters.
Passengers is a great movie. It's not about space. It's not a Sci-Fi thriller. It's more of a Sci-Fi drama. As expected the performances by Lawrence and Pratt are excellent. Sheen and Fishburne have only supporting roles but are done very well, straight forward but well enough. Some of the dialogue is over used. What I liked best is the subtlety. I love that this movie is wrapped in a movie. This could have been done equally well as two people sitting in a room talking. It's about the need for companionship. It's about our fears and our frailty. It's about the sacrifices people make for the ones they love and it's about the nature of love itself. More so than anything it's about the nature of love. We are all passengers of life, afraid to go it alone. It shows how love it born from necessity and that once in it, we blind ourselves to the circumstances surrounding it. There are many things that happen which are hinted at or implied but never dwelt upon. The writers didn't forget to address issues. They start the line and allow you to finish though obvious course.
If you watched this and didn't like it, I would recommend watching again. I loved this movie and have seen 4 times thus far. Def. worth the price of admission.
