Review of Pan (2015) by Brandon L — 24 Dec 2015
SUMMARY: A mish-mash of film-making styles that doesn't live up to its source or even its own concept, it's still fun as a rental to go along with family pizza and movie night. Rent it, but don't dream about buying it!
REVIEW: While this film was widely "panned" by critics (sorry about that), it was nonetheless a fun fantasy-world adventure that was worth a rental. Sure, if you paid full theatrical price, you might have been upset, but if you get it for a buck, it will be well worth it.
"Pan" sets out to tell the back-story of the characters from Never Neverland, and falls well short of its own premise. It does, however, deliver a fun, visually-appealing fantasy adventure that seems at least inspired by Peter Pan's characters.
It's been accused of being joyless, and I find that maybe too harsh. Yes, it often takes itself too seriously and manages to avoid obvious wins where they could have had more fun with the story, but what you get in the end is not bad for a night of family movie-watching.
If there's one thing that stands out as truly terrific in this movie, it's Hugh Jackman's performance as the pirate leader. (Not Captain Hook. See what I mean about missing obvious wins?) He's wonderfully over the top and his wardrobe matches his attitude. Putting him at the helm of a flying pirate ship was a surprisingly good move.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY NOTES: some mild language, a few scary moments.
