Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Dominic J — 26 Feb 2010
When I first saw this, it was in English class sophomore year, and I could relate to Timothy Hutton's issues just a bit. Upon second viewing, it is an amazing first look at the dark nuances of American life.
Oscars are deserved for Robert Redford, his first film as director and Timothy Hutton playing Conrad getting a Best Supporting Actor. The film itself won Best Picture, and it was deserved. The film itself was an independent product of Sundance, which made its debut the year before.
Donald Sutherland plays the concerned father who tries to mediate between him and Mary Tyler Moore, in a rare dramatic role as an emotionally remote, cold mother built around the walls of her grief. I cannot say what the reason is, but it is a movie to watch and remember.
