Review of Ordinary People (1980) by Keith P — 07 Dec 2018
This is my favorite movie of all time. It won the 1980 Best Picture Oscar, and Robert Redford won Best Director. Timothy Hutton won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but that could have just as easily gone to Judd Hirsch, who plays Dr.
Berger. Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland are also fantastic as the parents of Timothy Hutton. Don't watch it if you dislike emotional intensity and dysfunction. For those who do, the next time you watch this movie, note details such as early on when Mary Tyler Moore is setting the table, with perfect precision; she hates "messes" of all kinds but loves order, which is why she can't deal with her emotionally messed-up son, who has survivor's guilt following a boating accident that kills his brother.
