Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Tom D — 08 Jun 2011
A good story and well rendered, but let down by some poor direction. Emily Watson was brilliantly cast. Unfortunately I was disappointed by some of the production values that suggested it was made on a low budget.
I was also very disappointed that with much of the movie set in Perth, all of the scenes there were filmed in recognisable places around Adelaide - the Metropolitan Hotel, Pitt Street, Largs Bay to name a few.
There was also a skyline shot of Adelaide, with the Westpac building visible, which at the time the movie was set, didn't exist. The location of the Bindoon home, hours from Perth and in a desert location couldn't be further from where it really was.
Clearly the producers thought an international audience wouldn't pick it up, but I can't help but think it could be insulting to those boys who lived there. Nevertheless, the story brings shame on the respective governments of Australia and the United Kingdom.
