Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Lú 'Lourdes' P — 09 Jan 2012
In a practice that continued into the late Seventies, children in care were shipped from the UK in their thousands to Commonwealth destinations such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa because it was cheaper to pay for their 'upbringing' abroad.
Many were erroneously told they were orphans and had their birth certificates doctored to cover the tracks of those responsible for this inhuman penny-pinching. Emily Watson (whose mother died suddenly during filming) delivers a powerhouse performance in portraying social worker turned investigator Margaret Humphreys.
Moving and inspirational.
