Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Sarah K — 23 Mar 2013
Based on a true story, Emily Watson is riveting as Margaret Humphreys, the British social worker who uncovers the shameful history (from the 1950s-70s) of England illegally deporting thousands of unaccompanied minor children in the foster care system to Australian orphanages that were frequently abusive workhouses.
The film captures her devotion to these children (now adults) in their quest to find their families and what it cost her in her own family life. Although her determination to correct a horrible wrong is inspirational, it is the resilience of the victims of this atrocity that is truly amazing.
Indeed, they never considered themselves "victims;" they merely wanted to know who they were and try to reconnect with the families from which they were torn.
