Review of Oranges and Sunshine (2010) by Alex C — 07 Feb 2012
"Oranges and Sunshine" is a story about a social worker who uncovered the awful longtime scandal that involved the deportation of children from the UK to Australia, leaving many of these children to feel abandoned and parent-less through adulthood.
The harsh effects and the depression caused by this was of course obvious. Emily Watson plays the social worker Margaret, who's tireless work of trying to reunite these people with their parents and other relatives is captured well on screen.
Hugo Weaving has a nice supporting performance as one of a pair of siblings looking for their mother. But overall, the film was just okay. It moved kinda slow and I almost wish there was a movie actually following the deportation from one of the children's perspective, maybe that would have been more.
Still, I can recommend it to somebody to rent.
