Review of Open Range (2003) by Mike L — 05 Jul 2009
A western with a point of view, how original. We find early on that there is a major disagreement between two parties, those who allow "free" access to water and grass and those parties who dont. Free Range focuses on a town that does not agree on this philosophy, granted this town is corrupt, but that adds to the drama of the story.
This is a film that returns the Western to its glory; a good story with the vista to match. The basis of the story is a good man, Duvall, is called out for unethical business practices, ie free range, by the local town entrepreneur and is given an ultimatum; leave or face the consequences. Well Duvall along with Costner decide to face the bad guy and they end up winning the fight and Costner ends up getting the girl, in this case Annette Bening.
A modern classic western.
