Review of One Hour Photo (2002) by Karl V — 19 Jan 2010
Apparently, there's two different cuts of this film. The original (as usual) doesn't start chronologically with the ending and doesn't portray Robin Williams' character as a freak as much. It plays more on the fact that he's just lonely as fuck.
Either way, the version I saw had its brilliant moments and its cliche ones. I had a big problem with the structure; the entire first half of the movie is nothing but setup. NOTHING really happens until the midpoint when Sy gets fired and immediately discovers that Will Yorkin is cheating on his wife. Now, the second half of the movie kicks ass. There's a lot of suspense to be had, and Williams' performance is solid.
Throughout this thang, we get to learn some cool shit about photography and its history. That was awesome. The fact that this has to all be explained via voiceover...not awesome.
I'd like to see the original cut to compare films...as it stands, 3/5 boobies.
