Review of Ondine (2010) by Robert B — 03 Mar 2010
Jordan makes one concession to movielore - this selkie (Bachleda) is a leggy supermodel-type clad in diaphanous dresses - and there's an awkward tonal shift late on as Ondine's true identity is revealed.
Still, Farrell's soulfully salty, and we get a nice contribution from Rea as a priest who recognises traditional Catholicism can be no match for the siren's song. Jordan's Irish films have always felt more assured and composed than his Hollywood ventures: this one may be too becalmed, in the main, to threaten "Alice in Wonderland"'s box-office progress, but - as shot by Christopher Doyle in fisherman's blues and greens - it never lacks for poetry; and, almost needless to say, Jordan's vision of Ireland is a good deal more convincing than "Leap Year"'s.
