Review of Once (2007) by Jim E — 19 Jul 2010
I'd wanted to see this movie for a while and honestly it didn't live up to expectations, although it was quite decent. not enough songs/enough variety in the songs, and sometimes with music sequences that were unnecessarily long- they did not drive the story or tell us more about the characters by virtue of the fact that they were complete performances of the songs. kind of seems like, in some cases, the film-makers just hadn't quite figured out how to integrate the musical elements in a more seamless way.
I object to the description of this movie as a "musical" as the music is not for the most part used to tell the story, although it is an integral part of it.
At any rate, still quite good and worth seeing. I have further comments to make but can't make them without possibly ruining the story for some people.
