Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Nik B — 21 Nov 2010
Made great with another fantastic pairing of Brando and Malden. Malden getting a great speech inspiring the longshoremen cooperation against their mob opressors. And Brando of course, as the simpleton mob lackey turned stool pigeon. The plot, which has great historical significance, is still not my favorite part of the movie.
Brando's portrayal as a confused ex-fighter who only knows disappointment, and to see him struggle with the concept of doing the right thing. His guiklt over "the wrong thing" is apparant, but what motivation does he have to convert? Love? A lesser actor would have made the jump to obviously. Brando still shows it as difficult as it really is.
