Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Sean C — 14 Jul 2011
This is a film that works on multiple levels after multiple viewings over many years.
Dealing as it does with the inner-conflict of the Brando character, it rises to quality of drama rarely seen in film. The conflict continues in his relationship with his brother, with expected but heart-rending results.
It is a shame that the church was used as the symbol of a moral code in this film. It is a shame, not because it is a moral code, but because it is the wrong code. Nonetheless, that will not spoil the film. The positives far outweigh that one negative.
