Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Andrew C — 01 Jan 2011
With eight Oscar wins and three other nominations for Best Supporting Actor (among others), this is without doubt one of the most decorated movies of all-time and arguably contains the best display of ensemble acting.
While Brando is in nearly every scene of the movie, he never fades and you can just tell that he *lived* this character but Eva Marie Saint, Lee Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger more than hold their own delivering strong, convicted performances.
There is a ton of political baggage and back story surrounding the history of this film but just within the bookends of its credits it delivers a powerful story of overcoming challenges, corruption and building character.
A must for all fans of film. 7/8/9.
