Review of On the Town (1949) by James G — 17 Aug 2007
Great ensemble musical full of memorable songs and rich in humour, which is quite classy in places ("Dr Kinsey, I presume?"; "Did you ever read The Lost Weekend?"/"Read it, I think I'm living it").
The male leads are appealing and talented, Kelly is his usual self, Sinatra is at his most boyish and Jules Munshin the joker of the pack; they are well-matched by the excellent female cast, Ann Miller is very sexy, Vera-Ellen sublime (her character doesn't have much to do except be fancied by Kelly and is a bit of an ice maiden) and Betty Garrett an absolute hoot.
Her flatmate is a scream, too. A classic you can watch over and over again and never tire of.
