Review of On the Silver Globe (1989) by Gordon C — 09 Jul 2009
I sometimes suspect that some critics will praise a film on the basis that, if they don't understand it, it must be good. Personally, I always suspect that it's just possible that if I don't understand a film, it might be because it's nonsense.
In this case, it might help a lot if the makers had been able to complete the entire movie according to their vision. It might also help if they'd had access to a larger budget and greater resources to help achieve their vision. It might help, too, if I were able to understand the Polish dialogue, and not have to rely on a possibly inaccurate translation.
It might even help if my DVD edition of the film (the only version I've seen) was not a rather poor copy.
You have to admit that, considering the Polish communist authorities were sufficiently disturbed by the movie to halt its production, and that the director waited 10 years in exile before being able to complete the (2 1/2 hour) film, he must surely have had something to say.
I just don't know what it was.
