Review of Now, Voyager (1942) by Ruth A — 11 Oct 2007
One of, if not my favorite, Bette Davis movies. Classic melodrama. Gladys Cooper positively chews the scenery as the unbelievably over-the-top, control-freak, manipulative mother. Davis is positively riveting.
Her transformation from dowdy and repressed into a quiet, self-assured beauty is wonderful to watch, you can't help but cheer for her. My DAD even liked this movie, which basically means it succeeds without resorting to sappiness.
:) And Paul Henreid...that whole light-two-cigarettes-at-once thing is HOT. "Oh Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars." :).
