Review of Now, Voyager (1942) by Steph O — 29 Jul 2010
It's melodramatic, it's cheesy, it's stylish... it's so Bette Davis. Some people might have heard of "Now, Voyager" from the hilarious moment in the movie "The History Boys" when a couple of the students re-enact the famous final scene.
I love that final scene, it's one of the best final scenes in movie history. "Oh, Jerry. Don't let's ask for the moon... we have the stars!" I love Paul Henreid too. Mostly because he was in "Casablanca".
So was Claude Rains actually. Anyway there's another great moment in "Now, Voyager" where Paul Henreid puts two cigarettes in his mouth, lights them both, then passes one to Davis. Surely you've seen that done in plenty of movies before, right? Well this movie made that gesture famous, and apparently Paul Henreid improvised that moment.
