Review of Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) by Uzy A — 10 Nov 2007
Herzog continues the alternate line of Dracula films showing the count not as a charismatic gentleman but as a disgust-inducing lonely creature. It scarcely can be considered a horror film, but this hypnotic effort nevertheless manages to convey a hopeless state (further intensified by alluding to a great plague in the city).
Isabelle Adjani is perfect as the victim and Bruno Ganz, while not in one of his more challenging roles here, managed to convince me of his empty brashness.
To me, this film holds well after all these years, and the eerie, mesmerizing soundtrack by Popol Vuh fits the atmosphere of the film like a glove (a fingerless one - got to make room for the fangs).
