Review of Nocturnal Animals (2016) by Wayne K — 12 Mar 2018
An emotionally fraught experience, bolstered by economic writing and excellent performances, Nocturnal Animals deals with harsh subject matter with maturity and without grandiosity. Jake Gyllenhaal is terrific as both the frustrated writer and anguished father in the 2 parallel stories which draw closer as the movie progresses.
Michael Shannon, Hollywood's go-to man when they need a tall, scary dude, grumbles his way through a part that might be clichéd, but you can see him putting everything he has into it, especially in his evil stares, an art he's practically mastered.
The tale unfolds steadily and with us always learning new things as the characters do. The villains are easy to detest and the goodies are easy to empathise with. It's not a movie people will be talking about for years to come, but it is a great flick you should definitely check out if you're looking for something serious to watch.
