Review of Night of the Living Dead (1968) by Jason E — 06 Sep 2010
George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" from 1968 is a masterpiece and has remained my very favorite horror movie. Even with a small budget, Romero creates a film that is genuinely creepy and frightening.
The relatively unknown cast does a good job considering none had any strong acting background. Romero's atmosphere is dark and eerie and his careful use of shadows and sound is brilliant. I loved the sounds of the news broadcasts that played subtly in the background during a portion of the film giving it a sense of realism.
"Night of the Living Dead" set a new standard for the horror movie genre, one that has yet to be topped. Regardless of the millions upon millions of dollars poured into more recent pictures, very few have even come close to Romero's zombie classic.
