Review of Night and the City (1950) by Zach F — 12 Sep 2008
Night and the City is my second Dassin film, and I certainly wasn't as impressed with this one as I was with The Naked City. Perhaps it has something to do with the film set in London and the premise involving gambling and wrestling.
Well shot in black and white and tightly edited, the film is lean and carries little fat, but it's the characters and the premise which ultimately didn't do much for me this time around. Although Night and the City is seemingly more plot-based than The Naked City, its story and main character (played by Richard Widmark) I found a bit flat.
Although I remain less enthusiastic about this film, I'd still slightly recommend it for its tense atmosphere and black & white cinematography. A mild thumbs up, but still a thumbs up never-the-less.
