Review of Night and the City (1950) by Josh K — 29 Apr 2011
This is the best--and the bleakest--film noir film I have ever seen. A dark and grimy London grinds up and tears apart loves, ambitions, and hopes--including those of the villains and would-be femme fatales.
Dassin's direction (or maybe it is Max Greene's cinematography) is brilliant in its use of lighting. The "hero", played by Richard Widmark, who seems to be wearing suits that are a couple sizes too big, looks puny and overwhelmed by everything that is going on around him.
