Review of Near Dark (1987) by Aren B — 13 Jul 2010
Moody and original and refreshingly devoid of vampire cliches, "Near Dark" is a flawed and innovative vampire film. Kathryn Bigelowâ??s camera is vibrant and the characters, especially Bill Paxtonâ??s Severen, are exhilarating, but the entire film seems an odd conglomeration of biker culture, southwestern rural life, and vampires.
Itâ??s an anticlimactic film, regardless of the style and atmosphere that it boasts. Still, itâ??s worth a watch in a time when vampire movies have become so timid, if only to see a unique twist on the familiar vampire/human love story.
