Review of Mother (2010) by Acacia — 17 Sep 2017
This is one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen. It is a mix of horror and black comedy. A couple lives out in the country with nothing much around. She is much younger than her husband (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem).
They seem happy. He is a writer and she is busy renovating their huge, sprawling Victorian home. There are a few things that puzzle her, but for some reason, she seems to shrug them off. One day, a man knocks on their door.
He is a fan of the writer and also a doctor (Ed Harris). Over his wife's objections, the husband invites the man in and then later invites him to stay. Without going into the details, things begin to go downhill from this one event.
The director takes the idea of intrusions in a marriage and your life and takes them over the top and then way off the rails. This film is insane! After seeing it and not really having any sense of what was happening, I think I do now sort of understand what it was all about.
While watching, you get caught up in the crazy and get carried away. Later, for me, it was easier to ruminate on what it all meant.
