Review of Monkey Business (1952) by Kevin R — 13 Sep 2012
The history of discovery is a history of people who didn't follow rules.
Dr. Barnaby Fulton is a happily married man that has been working on a youth serum unsuccessfully for some time. He tests his serum on monkeys and one inauspicious day when he thinks the monkeys has been mixed up, he tests the serum on himself. He discovers it works and it may infuse some spice back in his life.
"I'll pull that blond hair out by its brown roots.".
Howard Hawks, director of Rio Bravo, The Big Sleep, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Scarface (1932), El Dorado, and Gentleman Prefer Blonds, delivers Monkey Business. The storyline for this picture is fun and entertaining. I found the dialogue and sequences to be more entertaining than funny but the acting was very good and the cast includes Cary Grant, Ginger Rogers, Marilyn Monroe, and Richard Coburn.
"You know I love you so much it makes me dizzy.".
I am a huge fan of Cary Grant and recently DVR'd a string of his movies that were airing on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). I found this film fun to watch but far from perfect. This definitely isn't one of Cary Grant's best pictures but the characters are portrayed and delivered well by everyone involved in the project. I strongly recommend seeing this film but I wouldn't add it to my DVD collection.
"You've done better work than you know.".
Grade: B.
