Review of Misery (1990) by Samuel C — 22 Jun 2010
This is one of the few films inspired by a Stephen King novel that was actually of merit. It is surprisingly tense and offers the viewer a side of Kathy Bates (The Blind Side) that they may not expect.
Not only is she pretty much fit for a straight jacket, but she is delightfully charming -- and probably worthy of the Oscar she took home for the role. It's realistic enough to make the viewer cringe, but outside reality enough for them to still feel almost safe trusting a stranger who is willing to help -- granted, they may think twice about it.
Unlike some lackluster Stephen King cinema escapades -- I'm looking at you "The Mist" and "It" -- this one is watchable, and, on some sick, twisted level, maybe even enjoyable.
