Review of Midsommar (2019) by Dmlyxcritic — 18 Dec 2019
Are we not supposed to get this movie? "Midsommar" had its moments of shock, terror and disgust, as is Ari Aster's style of film making, but fails to deliver just about everything, story-wise.
The characters' motivation (especially the cults) if not vague, is simply non-apparent. Judging from its lack of clear motive, the film could be viewed as pointless, with too many unnecessary scenes that only add up to its length, which was also problematic.
A few strong moments/ scenes emerged from the film, only to be followed by more boring bits of ritualistic crap that is almost unbelievable. The only takeaway I had for this film is the cinematography, and how the director superbly uses color in his film.
Everything else falls under satisfactory, bad, and mediocre.
