Review of Midsommar (2019) by Olivierpiel — 27 Sep 2019
Not only is the movie extremely arrogant and stupid, it is not beautifully shot as some claim. It runs 2h30 long and scenes are extended for the purpose of making it look "recherché".
It is hard to believe that Aster really attacks the Nibelungen hippie commune as much as he despises our decadent civilisation. We are left with the smile of our protagonist who overcome her fears, humiliation and grief by murdering ex-boyfriend and random people. Aster claims to worship Lars von Trier and Bergman, however I think he totally misunderstands them both. I didn't see any of the intelligent musings on violence and art in his work, just basic, literal, violent will-to-power.... Nietzsche was totally misunderstood by the national-socialists back in the day, mind you.
What is concerning is that such a nadir of nihilism is feted by "professional" critics while they despise Lars Von Trier's work, which is not only vastly superior but, more importantly, healthy.
