If we took the basic premise of John Carpenter's, Starman (1984) and combined it with Jeff Nichols' casual style of filmmaking and slow tension, we are rewarded with a thought-provoking, exciting, and well-acted film.

Each performance is exceptionally executed from Michael Shannon's protective father persona to Jaedon Lieberher's childlike innocence. The pair drive the film from beginning to end with a strong emotional connection that is both believable and heartbreaking.

Midnight Special may not be the next big fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled thriller, but it provides a carefully paced story and likable characters that will both entertain and intrigue most viewers.
