Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Lewis E — 17 Jul 2016
'Midnight Special' is a sci-fi movie that poses many intriguing questions...and answers none of them. What is this suspicious religious organisation known as 'The Ranch'? Never find out and the film stops mentioning them halfway through.
Why is the FBI chasing the boy? Something about government secrets which never comes to fruition. What mysterious powers does this boy has? Apparently everything. The dude can shine white light into people's eyes, giving them visions.
He can bring down satellites. He can speak in multiple languages. He can manipulate computers. He can emit a rainbow out of his butt...okay this last one I made up but I wouldn't put it past this film.
The mystery and tension that kick-started this story hinted at a promising revelation but the ending proved limp, underwhelming and lacking meaningful connection to the events which preceded it. I can only equate it to the feeling of receiving a surprise package, you then spending ages excitedly opening it only to realise it's empty.
