Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Nick P — 12 Mar 2017
SKIP THIS TURKEY DIPPED IN MOLASSES. Midnight Special is NOT special while also being uncomfortably unclear. The acting is sufficient but it can never redeem the poorly written script. The film lacks intelligent information beyond a handful of "bare bones" one-liners.
The reasoning behind most of the characters' motivations is never addressed. The ethics and morality of the story are very blurry and, by the end, nothing really makes any sense. It's like watching a distant storm brew to then take down trees, but we're left with nothing to do but assume there's a cleanup.
The who, what, why, and how questions are not entirely answered, The boy is not lovable, the parents quietly odd, and everybody else is just filler material. While this turkey looks to taste better than a tofu bird, it ultimately leaves you with the gurgles of a near-empty stomach and a bitter aftertaste.
