Review of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) by Trent O — 12 Jun 2009
Much to my surprise, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus has become a youtube sensation, which I never saw coming especially from The Asylum company, which specializes in churning out major rip-offs of popular films that are just awful.
To an even greater surprise of mine, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus wound up being very enjoyable thanks in part to its nonsensical storyline as well as hilariously-bad acting and special effects. The story pits former has been singer/Playboy model Debbie Gibson (sorry, no titties in this one) as a marine biologist who witnesses the unlocking of a megalodon shark and giant octopus from the frozen glaciers.
Now, these two beasts are killing thousands of people by way of attacking ocean oil rigs, ships, airplanes (they leap out of the water or swat with their tentacles), and the golden gate bridge. There are plenty of corny moments that lead up to the final battle which, as expected, isn't all that long.
Still, with hilarious acting from everyone around, including the always-bad Lorenzo Lamas, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus had me laughing all the way to the end, not to mentioned equally entertained, which is rare as Asylum films usually have me pissed off to no end by the time they are over.
This is definitely worth a watch with friends and beer.
