Review of Meet John Doe (1941) by Samantha W — 28 Jul 2009
This is yet another amazing film from Frank Capra. Its just epic scene on top of epic scene. Although criticized for being overly sentimental, Capra doesn't hesitate to show the ugly side of the world.
Its just that he believes in goodness as well. That is a more honest view than most filmmakers. This film in particular has stunning performances from Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward Arnold.
It starts off as a movie about journalism, and the opening shot is still very relevant today. But Capra uses that as a springboard to open up an examination of the human condition as a whole. And as always he succeeds brilliantly.
