Review of Meet John Doe (1941) by Steve S — 27 Jul 2011
***1/2 (out of four).
Wonderful film from director Frank Capra about the power of standing up for the "little" people It's theme he used in many of his movies throughout his career, but it is something he did so well.
Barbara Stanwyck is a newspaper woman who has just been given her pink slip due to company cutbacks. On her last day she fabricates a letter to the editor written by John Doe. He says that he is going to stand up for the poor people losing their jobs by jumping off a skyscraper.
The letter becomes such a sensation that the newspaper hires a man to pose as John Doe to get publicity.
Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck are wonderful in this breezy and sweet picture.
