Review of Meet John Doe (1941) by Davey M — 15 Jan 2014
The story maybe bites off more than it can chew (Capra lamented the fact that they never could find quite the right ending), but, in many ways, in spite of (or, more likely, because) it's a little rougher around the edges than "Mr.
Smith Goes to Washington" or "It's a Wonderful Life," this almost seems like the quintessential Capra, with all of his ideals and concerns up there on the screen, fighting for a satisfying resolution that's just out of reach.
As always with Capra, the film is warm, entertaining, funny, moving, and compelling, and it's also pretty dark. Stanwyck is the force of nature she always was.
