Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Frances H — 15 Feb 2013
I understand what the director was trying for when she made this movie, and she did succeed--you get the feel of what life was like on the trail in a wagon train--horrible and uncertain, so much so you wonder why anybody went, or if they would have started if they knew what was ahead.
But then if you know your history, you knew that already. But this movie was so slow and boring and hard to see and hear to prove that point, that it just wasn't worth it. It did pick up nearly half way through, but the point had already been made and the audience was suffering almost as much as the settlers on the wagon train.
Again, I must differ with the critics, as I did with Tree of Life and Melancholia. In Darkness is a much better movie about suffering and uncertainty, but without the flaws this had.
